While most fusion energy companies chase the dream of generating electricity from nuclear fusion, SHINE has carved a different path to success. Founded in 2010, the Wisconsin-based company is already generating revenue by selling neutrons—a byproduct of fusion reactions—for industrial imaging and medical isotope production rather than focusing solely on power generation.

SHINE's pragmatic approach targets valuable commercial markets where fusion technology creates immediate benefits, from neutron imaging services to medical isotope production (particularly lutetium-177 for cancer treatment), and future applications in nuclear waste recycling and energy generation. With nearly $800 million in funding and its under-construction medical isotope production facility called Chrysalis, Founder and CEO Greg Piefer believes this commercial approach provides valuable real-world fusion experience while building the capital and expertise needed for fusion's ultimate promise.
